    Hello Capt.Jeff,

I’m about to listen to the podcast and I’m sure you’re going to give the 5 pilots well deserved credit for safely managing a plane with faults beyond design to a successful landing. The Aviation Herald article you cite is a very good summary of the full ATSB preliminary report which I read at:

    http://www.atsb.gov.au/media/2888854/ao-2010-089%20preliminary%20report.pdf#page=0

  2. Capt. Jeff says:

Thanks for the link, Kevin. I did talk about the Quantas incident, but, I think I could have emphasized a bit more the fact that if it were not for the FLYING SKILLS and GOOD DECISION-MAKING SKILLS of these experienced pilots, this very well may have been a huge disaster. Although, I’m still scratching my head a bit about why the PIC kept re-engaging the autopilot all the way down final, and finally took manual control at 1,000 feet… I can assure you that I would be hand-flying all the way down, so that I could assess the flying characteristics of that configuration…

About flight simulators, since you are a mac user, you can try x-plane, at http://www.x-plane.com. You can download the demo which runs for 10 minutes and then ignores stick and rudder inputs. You can then practice your differential thrust flying technic ๐Ÿ™‚
If you get hooked, the full version is quite cheap.
I know I got hooked a couple years ago and started in me a passion to learn more about aviation and the dream of being a private pilot one day. Some day way out in the future, as raising a family of five doesn’t leave much room…
This passion for aviation is the reason I started listening to your podcast from the first episode when Fr. Roderick announced it. Have enjoyed every one of them, keep it up.

    God bless,
    Henrique

    Hi CA Jeff!
I hope you had a great Christmas, New Year’s, and vacation!

I’m sorry I’m tardy in getting this out. Would you please talk about the Immaculate Conception? I don’t think many people are aware of what it’s about. I think people are under the impression it’s about how Jesus got into Mary, rather than about the pure womb that would house Jesus for nine months. Thanks!

Also, about when you spoke of pilots hand-flying vs. machine-flying and the sinking feeling that can happen transitioning between the two: very shortly after takeoff, as we were still climbing, woo! did we have that sinking feeling! We were all still seated. As a flight attendant, I still had my shoulder straps on and boy did I feel it on those as the nose sank! I asked the CA about it later. He said they turned on the autopilot a little before it was ready. I TOTALLY thought of you and your podcast.

Thanks for a great show! Happy & safe flying! Peace, Kevin ๐Ÿ™‚
