Hey thanks, Capt Jeff!

Elton John's early stuff was catchy with really fun piano work. But it is definitely a crazy song that does not make much sense to me... But just for fun, if we want to give it a theological twist, maybe I would stretch it and say that a few of the lyrics -- "Take me to the Pilot of your soul" -- I can only say that as a Catholic Christian, I'd have to say that Jesus is the Pilot of my soul, I'm only the co-pilot. Glad your flying with Christ, Capt Jeff!

I think that shot captures twilight perfectly. I've not heard it called the terminator before but the grey line separates the illuminated day side and the dark night is pretty clear in your picture.

@captjeff That's awesome Jeff! Did you fly heavies in the Air Force as well? I've been looking at everything from the A-10 to the KC-135. While I definitely have my preferences, at the end of the day I just want to be in the air.

And thanks for the good luck wishes! I've heard the same from other folks as well, and Lord willin' I'll find my way into a unit somewhere flying something!

And @cliffravenscraft gspn is a good guy, we like him a lot of here at Livefyre!

And questions, boy do I ever :) Let me organize my thoughts and get back to ya, I'd love to get your wisdom on a wide range of things!

@JMattHicks Started flying after graduating from Auburn (well, I had started flying lessons in my teen years, but only a few hours) in 1981 when I entered the Air Force. A little over seven years in the USAF, then hired by Delta (I mean ACME!) in 1988. So, I guess about 30 years!

Good luck with your flight training and getting into the Reserves/Guard. If I had known about that option, that's what I would have done myself. I could have been flying for the "majors" 3 years earlier, and could be a B-777 captain with decent seniority! Hindsight...

Thanks for the welcome. I heard about Livefyre from my friend Cliff Ravenscraft, the "Podcast Answerman." If you have any questions about flying, send me some feedback.

How long have you been flying Jeff? I've got a good friend who's a KC-135 pilot in the AFRC who also flys American (I think) out of Chicago. He's taken me under his wing as I work to try and get a commission into the AFRC or the ANG to become a pilot. I'm 16.7 hours into my private pilot's license and should be done with my PPL by the end of February!

Anyways, enough of my rambling :) We're happy to have you on Livefyre. Let me know if you ever need anything, we'd be more than happy to help in any way that we can!

Raw deal from FAA. DC National is a nightmare for any pilot, and especially with restrictions since 9/11. I have heard that the nickname for the airport is "the postage stamp" because it has such a short landing strip that was really designed before the jet-age. Hope all goes well and have really enjoyed Catholic Weekend and Pan Am--keep up the good work.

Wow, Jeff... and here I am, thinking you'd been granted a nice long vacation. So sorry you went through that pain and hassle, and glad to know it's all sorted.

Of course, you know if you find yourself in RDU, I'll buy you dinner. :D

Wow, you brought out your old brand just in time to see the new show, "Pan Am". Can't wait to hear what you have to say about that! Welcome back! I loved both shows. The intro with the cool sound effect of the plane going overhead was especially missed.

Hi Capt Jeff!
This was an amazing episode! Thank you for giving your background on how you came to be a pilot, I don't think I had ever known, and it was very interesting.

Well, I have to say, I was enthrolled by your reading of the update of flight #447, and this says a lot coming from someone who, before your podcast, never thought aviation was something to wrap my head around. I have a few cousins who are pilots, but it was never something that turned my head. Until now!

Again, great episode! I really enjoyed it!

God Bless!

Jeff,
The picture you took of St. Pat's is spectacular. I am lucky to work only two blocks away from St. Pat's. I attend mass there several times a month on my lunch hour. The priests are faithful and fervent, always giving meaningful homilies. They have confessions during the masses, which is convenient. I know this can be controversial for some, but in such a large edifice, it is no more disruptive than the constant stream of tourists taking pictures and oogling. They rope off the front during mass so people don't cross in front during mass. The tablenacle is in the Lady's Chapel behind the main altar. Security guards ensure that no one takes pictures or video in that area.

I haven't listened to this episode yet, and just became aware of it when I opened your website. My itunes didn't download to my iPod. I look forward to each episode, and learning something new about planes. When I was 17, in 1965, my thought was that if I were a man with good eye sight, I would have been a pilot. Neither of those are obstacles now, I understand.

I've been lobbying my brother-in-law, Greg, a former air force office to listen to your show. He's retired but keeps busy volunteering at church. I'm looking forward to hearing his response to your show. I think he will enjoy it even more than I do, since he actually knows what you are talking about.

Best regards,
Mary Ward

This is a little late Cap'n but, on an earlier cast you mentioned Bishop Tobin and Kennedy and how some guy sent you an email or something . . . .Just wanted to say PLEASE PLEASE keep it up. YOU are a REAL Roman Catholic and we need to get the bishops in line with Rome also to keep the faith alive. The "social catholic" who left you the mail seem to be the ones who shout the loudest. I watch realcatholic.com vortex reports and we need more of us speaking up for the TRUTH not for the popularity!! God bless and please keep going if time allows!!

Hi CA Jeff!
I hope you had a great Christmas, New Year's, and vacation!

I'm sorry I'm tardy in getting this out. Would you please talk about the Immaculate Conception? I don't think many people are aware of what it's about. I think people are under the impression it's about how Jesus got into Mary, rather than about the pure womb that would house Jesus for nine months. Thanks!

Also, about when you spoke of pilots hand-flying vs. machine-flying and the sinking feeling that can happen transitioning between the two: very shortly after takeoff, as we were still climbing, woo! did we have that sinking feeling! We were all still seated. As a flight attendant, I still had my shoulder straps on and boy did I feel it on those as the nose sank! I asked the CA about it later. He said they turned on the autopilot a little before it was ready. I TOTALLY thought of you and your podcast.

Thanks for a great show! Happy & safe flying! Peace, Kevin :-)

I believe it. My dad was stationed in Puerto Rico in WWII and he told stories of landing Cubs in pretty precarious places checking radio towers. He said they would often take off from the beach by pointing the nose into the wind blowing onshore and doing a short roll out over the waves.

About flight simulators, since you are a mac user, you can try x-plane, at www.x-plane.com. You can download the demo which runs for 10 minutes and then ignores stick and rudder inputs. You can then practice your differential thrust flying technic :-)
If you get hooked, the full version is quite cheap.
I know I got hooked a couple years ago and started in me a passion to learn more about aviation and the dream of being a private pilot one day. Some day way out in the future, as raising a family of five doesn't leave much room...
This passion for aviation is the reason I started listening to your podcast from the first episode when Fr. Roderick announced it. Have enjoyed every one of them, keep it up.

God bless,
Henrique

Thanks for the link, Kevin. I did talk about the Quantas incident, but, I think I could have emphasized a bit more the fact that if it were not for the FLYING SKILLS and GOOD DECISION-MAKING SKILLS of these experienced pilots, this very well may have been a huge disaster. Although, I'm still scratching my head a bit about why the PIC kept re-engaging the autopilot all the way down final, and finally took manual control at 1,000 feet... I can assure you that I would be hand-flying all the way down, so that I could assess the flying characteristics of that configuration...

Hello Capt.Jeff,

I'm about to listen to the podcast and I'm sure you're going to give the 5 pilots well deserved credit for safely managing a plane with faults beyond design to a successful landing. The Aviation Herald article you cite is a very good summary of the full ATSB preliminary report which I read at:

Hey Jeff,

I'm catching up on your old shows, excuse my delayed feedback. I loved the Tina Shafer song, thanks for introducing her to us.

On the matter of a noob trying to land a 747, I wanted to share the story an old pilot buddy told me recently over a beer. He recalls vividly his first attempt to land a 747. On final approach, he descended too quickly at a low angle. Just before touchdown, a more experienced crewman on the flight deck yelled "You're flat, HANG ON!" Instead of landing rear wheels first and easing the nose gear down, he slammed all wheels down together. Hard. The impact had so much force it dropped all
the oxygen masks in the cabin!

He immediately knew he'd be fired because the company had a considerable expense replacing all the masks. Fortuately, he did not lose his job. The company figured they'd spent a lot money for him to learn that lesson, it'd be foolish to fire him then :)

Today he flies all freight and the load balancing is difficult to master. It took him a year to figure out how to land a 747 smoothly every time.

Congrats on the launch and thanks for the mention in a later episode :) Call us the next time your in Austin and we'll get some more Tex-Mex!

Hello Cpt. Jeff,
I just wanted to say I really like your Podcast. I enjoy your explanations on your profession. What I really like is that your podcasts are not glossed over. I like that you do not edit your mistakes, (like if you mispronounce a word, or get tongue tied), it would be so easy for you to delete those parts, but you don't. You are real and that is what I like about listening to you. Keep up the Great work.
By the way, I purchased the movie of St. Joseph of Cupertino, and I read a book about him before I ever heard of you. I really enjoyed both, and as a new Convert to the Catholic faith, I am so blessed to experience the Wonderful World of Catholicism.
You included.
May God Bless you Always.

It scares the hell out of me that a pilot will have NEVER flown a live passenger aircraft before the paying customers are on board. That would be like a surgeon watching video and never doing a residency.

It was nice to hear about your love of good music in church. I recently had a mini-rant on my blog about music. It was in a post about Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan was to play for Pope John Paul II, but Cardinal Ratzinger tried to not let that happen. He was not in favor of rock music. Well, the performance happened and the Pope (JP2) did a sermon on "Blowin' in the wind". Here is my rant about music.

"I'm totally behind the Pontiff trying to make the music of church more reverent and more Catholic. Latin seems to be abandoned in many parishes and with it, the ancient melodies. It's tough for me to wrap my head around singing second-rate jingle music from the 70s when we have mass music by Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Dufay, and Palestrina and more. While there are loads of great rock and folk songs to sing for edification, they are not for mass. What do you think?

Captain Jeff,

I found your first four podcasts hiding at http://captjeff.libsyn.com/. Is Liberated Syndication looking for more money from you?

In episode #2 you promised to talk about Saint Joseph of Cupertino (is he Apple's patron Too?). I found the following on Wikipedia:
Saint Joseph of Cupertino (Italian: San Giuseppe da Copertino) (June 17, 1603 – September 18, 1663) was an Italian saint. He was said to have been remarkably unclever, but prone to miraculous levitation and intense ecstatic visions that left him gaping.[1] In turn, he is recognized as the patron saint of air travelers, aviators, astronauts, people with a mental handicap, test takers, and weak students. He was canonized in the year 1767.

Patron of a comedic combination. :) :)

Re: part 2 conversion story. I can understand the reason for your search for a parish that had a music ministry appropriate for your skills and mellifluent voice. I was attending a convention of Whidbey Island about 15 years ago; on Sunday I found a nearby catholic church and was shocked that ALLELULIA could be sung so sorrowfully. It was just a week or two after Easter --everyone should have been happy that lent was over!

God's blessings abound because you are around. When ever you fly there is a VIP on board, so make the landings smooth.

I'm so sorry... I guess I had my RSS feed settings set incorrectly. I have changed the settings, and now iTunes should display more of my podcasts. You might try to click the triangle while holding the alt/option key to see if more of my episodes are available. If that doesn't work, on this website (CatholicPilot.com), select the "Podcast" category (right column, near the bottom). Then, look for the "Click here to listen!" link, right click the link and select "Save Link As..." (might be something different on Windows). Once downloaded, the files should play in iTunes or whatever you have set up for your default mp3 player. Yeah, I know that is a hassle. Let me know if you need any help.

I really would like to download episodes 1-8 on my iPod, but how do I do that? Only episodes 9-12 are available via iTunesstore.

Bye the way, I love your show!

What a guy. I'll bet he didn't have a wife or kids when he performed that maneuver. . . did he say it's an absolutely 'non-hazardous' maneuver? You could see the altitude lost in the flip in the video . . Wow.

Listened to this episode of Catholic Pilot and loved it! I especially loved hearing the audio when you talked with your co-pilot.
Question for your next episode: What do you do during a winter storm, like the ones the past few weeks? Do you still fly or are there any special instructions? Just wondering.
Keep up the great work Capt. Jeff!
God Bless,
-Daniel

I have a question for your next podcast. What is the difference between the pilot and the copilot? Is it a different career path or are copilots just less experienced than pilots? Also, does the navigator know how to fly the plane in the unlikely event that something should happen to the pilot and copilot? Thanks!

Thanks for playing my feedback! I wanted to recommend the following website to those who struggle with fear of flying. It has helped me a lot. I usually go through this (free) online course each time I fly. It's written by an airline pilot.

http://www.fearofflyinghelp.com/

I'm still a reluctant flyer, but I'm not so apt to imagine all sorts of crazy things when I hear a strange noise during the flight.

She's my youngest... just turned 13 on New Year's Eve. We couldn't take all of the noise of the band (they are students at her school) at a local venue, so we headed to a nearby Starbucks. We picked up her brother, Chris, still at the concert, shortly after I snapped the photo. My ears were ringing!

Glad you're back too. I loooooove your show. Can't get enough. I would listen to longer shows, including more about 'behind-the-scenes' stuff of flying, but in addition to what you're already doing rather than instead. In your case, more is better!

Capt. Jeff,

I too am glad that you're back!

One of the joys of traveling for my wife and I is to discover the similarities/differences between our home church and churches far away. You know that different diocese may have slightly different ways of doing the same mass. As we are largely stationary and you are slightly more mobile, it would be interesting to me to hear about your experiences with regional variations in the our Catholic Church.

Oh - and all of your pilot stories.... they may be old to you, but they're new to us.

:)

Keep 'em coming!

Glad you're back after that long hiatus. My vote is for you to do what you've been doing: answer the questions about flying and throw in the Catholic stuff too. You're not a Secular Pilot, you're thoroughly Catholic, and I don't see how you can be authentic if you don't include Catholicism.

I'm interested in knowing how you handle your faith in the cockpit and away from home. Do you find a place to go to daily Mass whenever you have the time in your schedule? I've always understood flying to be a profession that carries a lot of temptation with it---how does that affect you? Or being around others who might not be faithful? You used to wear a large Miraculous Medal---were you allowed to wear it while flying?

Keep up the great work! It took me a long time, but this morning I subscribed to your podcast via iTunes.

It was a bright and happy spot on a dark morning with drizzling rain that felt like November, when I was commuting to work. :)

Due to security reasons, I have to be 2 to 3 hours in advance at the airport, when I am flying as a passenger. I am the guy, who is there 5 hours before the flight - watching the planes. :)

Peace be with you! :-)

Hey Capt Jeff..
About 2 years ago I walked along the same path as you along the Mississippi River there in Memphis. I thought it was beautiful watching the barges go up and down the river. I also took notice at the pyramid building. Surprised to see it closed after being built in the 90s. Anyway, the pyramid is there because of the city's name Memphis, which is also the name of the capitol in Egypt. Anyway that riverwalk was really nice and relaxing.

Great job on your first podcast. I am looking forward to hearing more.

Well, Michael, you were one of the first ones in with the correct answer, but, John Hack from Savannah, GA beat you by about two hours. Since this is my very first giveaway, I'll go ahead and send one to you as well! Send me your address and requested size to feedback@catholicpilot.com. Thanks for playing!

Yeah, baby, I'm hip.

Thanks for the encouragement! By the way, if you want to read insightful thoughts from a clever lady, check out Maria's blog "Another Cup of Coffee" at begojohnson.wordpress.com.

And yes, the music is awesome. The band is the USAF jazz band Airmen of Note, the best big band in the world.

Such a clever guy. That music is a big winner--I love it. I can't decide if you're the Rat Pack or Jerry Lewis but it's perfect.

It kind of reminds me of the movies in the 60's that showed the really hip pilots. Are you hip?

I enjoyed it--great start, and now, no pressure.

You're right, Sara! Memphis was the ancient capitol of Egypt, located on the Nile River. Memphis, Tennessee is not the capitol of TN, but it is on a pretty significant river... the mighty Mississippi River.

They must have a pyramid because Memphis is the name of a city in Egypt. I could google it, but I won't cheat. Was it the capitol at one time?

Nice job on the podcast!

Glad to see that you're gonna start a podcast! This sounds like it will be really fun and interesting. Also, FYI I need to talk to you about the different types of products that we can create for the SQPN store.
